The epic fantasy novel Child of Blackwen is a coming-of-age adventure story about the young dhampir Artemis in the mystical world of Arrygn.

Born of a human and a vampire, Artemis was raised among the elves of Ellewynth by her mother’s friends Shadow, an elven soldier, and Talisa, a witch. An outcast in elven society, Artemis is protected by the Elders of the Woodland Realm because her mother, the vampire Tamina Ravenwing, once served them. As Artemis struggles to overcome prejudice, she must also learn to control her innate thirst for blood. Her efforts are made all the more difficult when Shadow and Talisa are called to serve in the eight-year-long war against the dragons.

Just after they return, Artemis begins dreaming her mother’s memories, only to discover that her guardians are plagued with the same dreams. This, along with the mysterious murders in the Woodland Realm, leads Artemis to learn the shocking truth about her mother’s death the unsavory woman in the dreams is none other than Tamina’s younger sister, Arlina.

Artemis poses a threat to the madwoman Arlina, usurper of the throne of Blackwen City—and the vampire will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat.

Child of Blackwen An Artemis Ravenwing Novel Book 1 eBook Melanie Rodriguez

A great debut novel by a writer with fantastic potential to be the next great fantasy powerhouse. I look forward to following the author's growth in the genre.

Now on to the book: the book is young adult, but like many YA books delves into the dark complexities of life. This particular book is akin in darkness level to the first Harry Potter book. Child of Blackwen is the first of a series and promises to become as dark a journey by the end, and contains some of the same positives found in the HP books to balance out the darkness: friendship. hope, joy, laughter, and love.

Overall. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in exploring a new fantasy series.

Child of Blackwen An Artemis Ravenwing Novel Book 1 eBook Melanie Rodriguez Reviews

I had the privilege of interviewing this author for The Inspire Cafe Podcast and read this book in preparation for it. I must say that as a person who normally reads non-fiction, this book was so entertaining and fun to read. I completely escaped into the story and loved the characters, the scene and story. I have already downloaded the next book in her series and look forward to reading more.
I've followed Melanie for a few years and remember meeting Shadow as a character early on. Melanie's ability to tell Artemis' story is well done and I can't wait to jump into the next book! Great read! Highly recommend!
Fascinating story. Well developed characters. Good world building. Great background information given in a balanced way. I could have done without the mundane swearing. It added nothing to the story, especially given the fact that there were expressions germane to the world the author built. Mundane swearing only served to distract and detract from the story.
This book has exceptionally strong female characters. I enjoyed Artemis' voice the most. Rodriguez seamlessly switches viewpoints to build a fantasy that's rich with imagery and emotion. Her writing is fantastic; you feel like you're there and can reach out and touch the scenes as they unfold. Even Shadow's horse, Azrael, is filled with personality. My only critique is that I wish the story would have been a bit lighter on the dream and vision scenes. I understand how they are essential to the plot; it's just a matter of preference. I look forward to reading more books in this series!
An amazing and intriguing start to a new series.

Melanie's descriptive writing pulled me into the wonderful world of Arrygn and dropped me in amongst the action. Arrygn is a fascinating place, with elves, vampires, witches, mages and much more.

The characters are dimensional and likeable, and I felt like I had made some new friends in Artemis, Jack and Shadow, to name just a few.

The book was well-written, kept up a good pace throughout and the ending had me heading straight into book two.
Writing a book review can be a difficult task, especially when you want to convey all of the reasons why people should spend their hard-earned money and time on someone else's thoughts and artistic innovations. Child of Blackwen is the first (of hopefully many) published works by Melanie Rodriguez. This introduction to Artemis Ravenwing is enchanting - the author's imagery places you right there alongside her heroine with memorable, relatable, and endearing characters you feel like you've known for years. Child of Blackwen is a pleasantly refreshing read with many twists, and Rodriguez's series could easily become the next "cult sensation" in young adult fantasy novels. If you are looking to go on an adventure, check out this book - it will not let you down.
I love this book. I am not a long time reader, actually past the pieces I was tasked with on school I never enjoyed the thrills of reading.

Until now, I gave a try to this book, supporting a young indie writer and I came to it with really low expectations, after all it was a first project, I thought it wouldn't be perfect. But, oh boy, how wrong I was. The story development and the characters has a steady flow, you never really feel lost or feel like things a dragging out too much. The actions "sequences" are intriguing and they really make you excited as you read. The light-hearted humor is there in a way that is funny but it's not trying to rub all over the place how funny it is. All an all it's a great project, I can't wait to read more.

I just wish it had an audiobook so I can hear to it as I do my long drives... maybe Morgan Freeman could do it.
